Pears are one of consumers' favourite fruits. Easy to find and with varieties to suit all tastes - I am sure you have participated in more than one debate at home about whether you prefer them more "sandy" or more "watery" - they have been part of our diet for hundreds of years.

It is one of the fruits that offers the greatest possibilities in the kitchen, either as a natural fruit, as part of a succulent pastry recipe or, as in the case of Italy, the country from which we export Abate pears, in pasta dishes, achieving an emulsion of sweet and savoury flavours that will surprise you.

Gastronomic options aside, the truth is that pears, from a nutritional point of view, provide great benefits for our health.

What do you think if we tell you a little more about pears and the "Abate Fetel" variety in particular?

September, the pear season begins

September marks the beginning of the pear season in its different varieties.

Undoubtedly, it is one of the juiciest fruits we can find. One of its characteristics, being 80% made up of water, is its easy digestion.

On the other hand, pears are antioxidants and contain nutrients that are beneficial for our digestive system, purifying our organism and favouring our intestinal flora.

It is a fruit with a high calcium content, so as well as helping to prevent calcification of our arteries, it helps to purify our organism.

Pears also provide a large amount of vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B3, C, E and K, as well as potassium, phosphorus and potassium. The high presence of vitamin B makes it a highly recommended food to favour our cardiovascular system and reduce the risk of heart problems.

Abate Fetel pear, a historic variety on our tables

The history of the 'Abate Fetel' variety is a curious one.

Known mainly for its production and export to Italy, it was actually discovered in France, according to the first written records found in about 1866, by the French Abbé Fetel Abbot near the commune of Chessy-les-Mines.

Despite this, it is estimated that, at present, the Abate Fetel pear variety is one of the most widely cultivated in Italy, accounting for approximately 7% of its national production.

It is grown mainly in the Emilia-Romagna region, which is also a protected geographical area for its cultivation.

Its characteristics make it an easily recognisable variety. It is one of the largest varieties of pears and is morphologically recognised for its elongated shape.

Its skin is thin and rough, with a green colour with brown parts or vice versa, depending on the ripeness of the fruit, and its average weight is approximately 200 grams.
