Mediterranean cuisine is known for the variety and richness of its food.

By now, we have all heard that this is the most recommended food base in the world for its multiple health benefits.

In our case, moreover, we are fortunate enough to have most of the foods that make it up always at our disposal in the markets and, in general, when it comes to fruit and vegetables, being in season.

The Mediterranean diet is a type of food that is typical not only of Spain, but also of countries such as Italy, Greece and Morocco, and is based on products such as fruit and vegetables, as well as oil, cereals, meat and fish.

The inclusion of all of these in our daily diet results in a balanced diet that is totally healthy for our organism.

Why is the Mediterranean diet so recommendable?

Among its main benefits are undoubtedly a better physical condition, as well as the prevention of diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. But other advantages are also associated with premature ageing and the appearance of different types of cancer.

In addition, maintaining a diet based on this type of food reduces the rate of obesity, balances our blood sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Here are the main guidelines to integrate the Mediterranean diet into your daily life in a simple way:

  • Eating 5 pieces of fruit every day is essential, as well as avoiding as much as possible the consumption of industrial juices or soft drinks because of their high sugar content.
  • Eating vegetables either fresh, as a main dish or as a side dish is very beneficial. Most vegetables can be steamed to retain even more of their benefits and nutrients.
  • Fish should have an important presence, if possible 2 or 3 times a week.
  • Among the benefits of olive oil is its ability to regulate cholesterol levels and blood pressure. When cooking, it is much better to use olive oil instead of butter.
  • Legumes, like fruit, should be integrated into our diet to a greater extent and, if possible, in larger proportions than meat.

Apart from these guidelines, we should not forget that breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it provides us with the energy we need for the whole morning.

A good breakfast should always include a dairy product, fruit, fruit juice as long as it is natural, toast and oil. We can add eggs as long as they are not fried.
